With respect to online dating, I now prefer actually to skip talking on the phone first. There have been several times, where like in Moxie’s example above, I got turned off by the phone conversation and no longer had a desire to meet. In one case the person went off on a 20 minute tangent on a topic I had zero interest in, it happened to be college football. I guess he didn’t pick up on cues that I had nothing to contribute and said little except “oh” and “i see.” I didn’t want to have to sit through that again on a date, so I cancelled. Similarly, a friend of mine got turned off after the guy made too many sexual references right away. (I guess he thought he was being funny?) You can also find something odd about the person’s voice that can be a turn off, that you could otherwise have looked past if you met in person. Though it hasn’t happened to me, a third friend cancelled meeting a guy whose voice she thought sounded too soft and “girly.”
On the other hand, if the phone conversation goes great, and you speak several times before meeting, then when you meet in person and g*d forbid either of you feel zero chemistry, you just spent double the amount of time you otherwise would have on someone that you are never going to see again.
